Reclaiming Africa’s Lost Narratives: The Mission Behind The African Mythology Series

Looking at the outcome of my exploration into Africa's history, exploitation, and resilience, it becomes heartbreakingly clear why a project like Nigerian Mythology is more than a creative endeavour—it’s a mission. Surveying the remnants of history left in the ruins of our past, obscured by lies purposefully strewn across the globe, I see the deliberate erasure of Africa’s true capabilities, achievements, and potential. These false narratives were crafted to justify unimaginable harm and to obfuscate the truth of what was taken from this continent and its people.

This isn’t just a historical observation—it’s personal. These narratives weren’t accidents; they were systemic. They were designed to diminish, dehumanise, and justify the extraction of wealth, knowledge, and lives while leaving the continent burdened with the aftermath. These widely spread and deeply rooted falsehoods continue to cast shadows over Africa today. But those shadows cannot fully obscure the light of what was and what can still be.

Nigerian Mythology is my way of collecting these scattered pieces of history and narrative that may yet be salvaged. It’s about preserving what remains, challenging the distortions, and building something new—a legacy of truth, strength, and resilience. Here’s what drives this work:

Preserving African Histories:

Many of our stories—the ones that define who we are—are at risk of being forgotten. Nigerian Mythology is my way of safeguarding them, weaving them together so they can endure for future generations to reconnect with.

Challenging the Lies and Distortions

For too long, Africa’s history has been distorted, its brilliance downplayed to justify its exploitation. This book is a counter-narrative, a reclamation of the rich, profound stories that reflect our intellectual and cultural depth.

Reclaiming Identity

Our mythologies are more than tales—they are blueprints for identity. By reviving and reimagining these stories, I hope to contribute to the reconstruction of a collective cultural identity that colonialism worked so hard to fracture.

Empowering Through Imagination

Stories inspire action. By showcasing our deities, ancestors, and heroes, I hope to provide a vision of African strength, resilience, and ingenuity that refuses to be constrained by the narratives imposed upon us.

Amplifying African Voices: This book isn’t just about storytelling but platforming African voices and perspectives. It will challenge Eurocentric versions of history and empower others to dig deeper into the truths of Africa.

Creating a Legacy of Rediscovery: This project isn’t just about the past; it’s about the future. By piecing together these fragments of mythology, I aim to create a foundation for a broader rediscovery movement, one where Africa’s histories, contributions, and narratives are reclaimed and celebrated.

Nigerian Mythology isn’t just a book. It’s a defiance of erasure. It’s a tribute to resilience. It’s a call to action for others to join this journey of rediscovery. The suppression of Africa’s histories may have left scars, but it hasn’t erased the echoes of its greatness. Through this work, I hope to amplify those echoes, reminding the world of what was and imagining what could still be.

This isn’t just a project—it’s a movement. And I hope you'll join me in it.
